Remember the name of the street where you grew up? Learned to ride a bike? Roller-skate? That fond address of childhood adventure lingers in the mind for a lifetime. Our Broadmoore Estates is named for just such a street. In fact, our Founder, John Lynch learned to ride his bike on Broadmoore Drive in San Ramon, California. Although he’s long ago given up training wheels, he dedicates this wine to all the streets in the world where new life-lessons are taught and to the spirit of adventure inherent in all of us. May it never die. Savor and enjoy.

2006 was the second year in a row for mild temperatures during harvest. The cool dry weather made for a later harvest and greater fruit development. This combination of factors along with lower crop yields than the previous year helped create wines of distinct character and complexity. The resulting balance of flavor and chemistry produces very food friendly wines.

This 2006 Broadmoore Estates Monterey Merlot has the aromas of ripe fruit. The layers of plum and cassis are followed by subtle hints of herbs and sesame. All of the aromas are framed with light toasty oak. The rich ruby red of this Merlot mirror the wine’s velvety texture. In the classic style of merlot this wine has a mouth filling soft texture brimming with fruit and followed by a smooth pleasing finish. This wine will cellar well for 2 to 4 years from release. Enjoy this wine with herb roasted chicken, beef and barley soup or grilled Portobello mushroom.

Introducing EVO!

Ask your Wine Consultant about the latest addition to our exclusive artisan wine brands EVO.

With two varietals under our newest brand, EVO wines are destined to be memorable and provocative. On their labels, these wines depict beautiful creatures that are near to becoming extinct on our planet. The artist's renderings of these animals are shown in half-profile, reflecting the reality that a species may be gone from our world in the blink of an eye. Our EVO wines celebrate nature and call upon all of us to protect our environment and our world.

EVO 2007 Mendocino Chardonnay

In Mendocino, California, you’ll find a white wine lover’s paradise – especially if you favor fragrance, fruit and crispness. In Mendocino, the days are hot and the evenings cool; these temperature shifts allow grapes to ripen and still maintain acidity, resulting in wines with mouth-filling fruit and palate-cleansing crispness.

Perfect Pairing: Grilled halibut, chicken cordon bleu or a light salad with apples and walnuts.

EVO 2006 Mendocino County Cabernet Sauvignon

The Mendocino County 2006 harvest was an excellent overall vintage year. After the cool, wet spring, the vintage came to bear fruit slowly and surely. This longer than normal ripening period, allowed the vines to produce mature, intense fruit without high sugars. This perfect wine’s grapes were grown in a single vineyard in northern Mendocino. The grapes were picked fully mature for your drinking pleasure now – and to stock your cellar for several years to come.

Perfect Pairing: Rich foods such as grilled steak, rich cheeses. For casual dining, choose grilled burgers, eggplant parmesan or cheese pizza.

Stretching Your Wine Dollars

These days as we all look for ways to stretch our dollars and while gas prices continue to cut into our expendable income, we wine lovers don’t have to sacrifice quality. These 4 easy steps will go a long way in stretching your wine dollars.

Step 1:

Look for great wines in your price range, also known as “value.”

James Laube, Wine Spectator’s Napa-based senior editor, often criticizes Napa for not competing in the value market. Of course, the high cost of Napa real estate and the overhead of running palatial tasting rooms means that more money goes into marketing than production. But today, wine lovers want to pay for what’s in the bottle. Thanks to John Lynch’s vision of turning living rooms around the country into Napa tasting rooms, WineShop At Home's cost goes into the bottle. “I don’t believe that wine is a lifestyle reserved for the rich and famous. My job is simply to create wines that real people fall in love with…”

Step 2:

Taste before you buy.

Many shoppers stand in front of the great wall of wine at their grocery or box store and choose a wine based on affordability and an attractive label. Even if a salesperson has recommended their favorite to you, you have no way of knowing if you will like it until you get it home. Sometimes we get home and are delighted and sometimes not. Remember, life is too short to drink bad wine, and monies are too precious to waste on so-so bottles. With WineShop At Home, we let you taste, discover and shop for wines all in the comfort of your home and you never have to waste your wine dollars again.

Step 3:

Start a collection.

Think of that bottom of your closet or pantry with 20 or more bottles tucked away as “building liquid assets.” Did you know that most wine purchased in the United States is consumed within 2 hours of purchase? Wine lovers often miss out on the grand adventure of drinking great wines after they have grown and matured in the bottle. Many of WineShop At Home's wonderful reds will continue to surprise and delight wine lovers 3-6 years after purchase. So the wonderful Pied Violet Merlot or McKenna Trilogy, so drinkable and complex today, will be even more amazing next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. These affordable wines will easily rival their $100 cousins 2-3 years from now. How many bottles do you have tucked away?

Step 4:

Take your own wine with you when you dine out.

Wine is a major source of markup for restaurants, especially wines by the glass. A recent trend for many restaurants, even those who market themselves as “Wine Bars,” are charging outrageous prices for their wines by the glass. They may have 1 or 2 really nice wines at $20 a glass and the rest are undrinkable. Recently, I took 2 bottles of WineShop At Home's Sangiovese, both under $20, to an upscale Italian restaurant to meet 2 other couples. The least expensive Chianti on the menu was $43 a bottle and not a great one at that. We paid $15 a bottle in corkage fees. The money we saved more than paid for coffee and dessert!

Corkage fees range from $0-$20 at most restaurants. Inquire before you go and always bring a bottle that is worthy of their wine list. Offer your server or sommelier a taste and spend some time discussing the wine’s characteristics with him or her. If by chance the corkage fee disappears from the bill, thank them by adding it into the tip.

Cheers!

Choose The Right Home Based Wine Business

Deciding to start in direct sales is a big decision, choosing a product you are passionate about is usually the first step. I imagine most of you are passionate about wine, you like trying new wines and probably think attending wine tastings is extremely fun. So now you are looking at the different companies that are available to work with, and wondering which company you become a wine consultant with will be the most profitable and which will help you reach your goals. So let's look at a few things.

The Wines

It may seem like a small thing. Obviously they all have great wines or they wouldn't be in business. But maybe you are looking for a variety of wines, or just wines from a single region. You of course want to know if the wines are available in stores and restaurants so you aren't competing with retail establishments. Some questions to ask:

Where are your wines from?
How many wines do you have?
What is the average cost of the wine?
Is the wine exclusive to the company or available in stores?
How often do you get new wines in?

The answers to some of these questions can become extremely important after you've already chosen a company. Maybe you love California wines but you find that your community prefers Italian or French. While you may enjoy a $35 bottle of wine, how many bottles will your clients order?

Who Pays for the Wine For The Tasting?

Wine home businesses are a bit different than most other direct sales businesses in that our product is consumable, and must be finished the night of the tasting. While other wine consultants do have to pay for the products they show during parties, most of them can use the same products over and over, in this business we can't do that. It's important to understand who pays for the wine and how that will affect your ability to book tastings. Some companies have the host pay for the wine which may limit the number of tastings you can book and affect how well the host will encourage her guests to place large orders. Other companies you pay for the wine yourself and so you need to have the money upfront and know that you can market enough wine so that you earn that money back. Other companies have you pay for the wine but then reimburse you, so you need the money upfront but it may be easier to book parties since the host doesn't have to pay for the wine. Some questions to ask:

Who pays for the wine for the tastings?
How much is the wine?
Is there any reimbursement?
What is the average cost of a tasting for the consultant?
How much is shipping?

The Training

Training in direct sales is important like any business. However unlike working at a law firm or marketing company, in direct sales you have a lot of different people to learn from. Corporate will likely have conference calls, seminars and conferences. Your team or upline will also probably have their own training. In some companies the top leaders will also offer training. Some questions to ask:

What initial training do you offer?
What type of training on each of the wines do you offer?
How often are conference calls?
Are you available for personal training?
What written materials are available?

The Kit and Marketing Materials

Typically in direct sales your kit will include some product plus your first set of order forms, brochures, manual etc. Finding out what is included in your wine kit is important. Some companies have wine included in their kit while others do not. Some provide an online kit where you print everything off yourself while others have professional brochures and materials printed. Some companies don't really have marketing materials, you have to create your own. Some questions to ask:
What does the kit include?
What printed materials does the company provide?
How costly are new marketing materials when you reorder?

The Earning Potential

This is what we really want to know right? Keep in mind when asking these questions that all earnings are really dependent on how much you work your business, as well as taking into account all the answers to questions you've already asked, like how affordable the wine is and how easy it is to book a party. Some questions to ask:
What is the commission rate?
Are there different commission rates depending on leadership levels or sales goals?
Are there bonuses?
Do you earn on wine clubs?
Do you earn on reorders?
Do you earn on website orders? Phone orders?

The Fun Stuff

Direct sales companies are notorious for providing incentive trips for wine consultants. So ask about the fun places you can earn your way to! Ask about the annual conventions, are they in great locations? Do you get to try new wines? What other ways are consultants rewarded for doing a great job?

Screwed!

According to studies, wine corks represent at least two thirds of the cork industry, which is a $1.3 billion industry. It is feared that with the reduced amounts of wine companies using corks in their wine bottles, the industry will dramatically reduce and the forests used to manufacture the cork will be unprofitable and could be subject to destruction.

So, why is it that has made these wine companies change from corks to fake corks and screw caps? After all, corks have been used to seal these bottles of wine for thousands of years and all good French wines have been using them for at least four hundred years, so why the big change?

The answer to that question is simple. The technology for sealing bottles of wine has evolved as everything in life has. They aren't top of the range technology anymore and to be frank, they aren't even particularly good at what they are meant to do. Ok, they stop the wine from escaping, but, and this is quite a big but, they are subject to a chemical called 2,4,6-trichloroanisole. You may have no idea what this chemical is, but it is estimated to affect 3-7% of all wines that use natural corks. It is a foul tasting chemical and it can severely ruin a wine's flavor. This defies the point of using it, especially if you are planning to age the wine for several years.

Another reason why the change has been introduced is because the demand for wine has increased dramatically over recent years. This has meant that more bottles of wine need corks, and the supply of good quality corks are becoming hard to find to meet the demand. Cork trees cannot be harvested for the first time until they are 54 years old! After each harvesting you must then wait another 9 years before cork can be taken from the same tree. That is one reason why synthetic cork substitutes are being used. However, these aren't particularly brilliant for stronger wines and have been proven to be harder to remove than real corks.

It is this reason why screw caps are becoming more and more popular amongst wine companies. They do not leak and therefore do the same job as the cork, but with more practicality. They are cheaper and easier to produce and the styles and makes of screw caps made ensure that the metal in the cap do not affect the wine in any way. Australia is leading the way in screw caps with almost 50% of their wines being closed with them.

Screw tops have proven to be more practical than corks or even synthetic corks, but some people argue that it takes away the romance of a bottle of wine. Can a good quality, well-aged bottle of wine really be respected and enjoyed with a cheap and nasty screw top? Different people have different answers to that question, and it is one that is left to the drinkers preferred taste. The question you have to ask yourself is, how long will it be before all bottles of wine are sealed in this way?

What to Look For While Tasting Wine

While you are tasting wine, your mind will be racing to connect all the senses to determine whether or not you like the wine. So what should you be paying attention to?

There are only four tastes you can perceive, sweet, salty, bitter, and sour. Wine contains no salt, so you should not taste perceive any saltiness so we can really only determine sweet, bitter and sour on our tongue when tasting wine. Any sour flavor will usually indicate acidity while bitterness is produced from tannins and high alcohol. You can usually tell this if you are a new wine drinker by what I call a "bite" when you take your first sip, tannins are not a taste, it's a sensation. Sweetness occurs in wines that have sugar leftover in them.

Sweetness will be tasted on the tip of your tongue and will usually be tasted right away. Any sour or acidic flavor will appear on the sides of your tongue against your cheeks and possibly at the back of your throat, while bitterness will grip you on the back of your tongue. The aftertaste of wine is important to think about in terms of how balanced the flavors remain in your mouth after swallowing. Aftertaste of excellent wines usually lasts 1-3 minutes.

As you combine what is happening to your taste buds with what you smell in the wine, you will begin to be able to differentiate between varietals and understand which wines you will like better.

Wine Tasting Events Are Sweeping the Nation

Wine Tasting events have never been more popular. In California’s wine country, tasting rooms are packed with the 20-somethings, 30-somethings, 40-somethings and the 50+ crowd. There seems to be no age barrier to the quest for, and the enjoyment of wine. The Wine Tasting experience has also become more and more expensive with some Napa and Sonoma Valley tasting room prices topping the charts at upwards of $25.00 per tasting guest.

Many people are interested in becoming wine enthusiasts, yet are intimidated about wine tastings because they often seem to be complicated rituals in which only the well-informed, wine connoisseurs can participate. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The most important thing to know about wine tastings is that they should be fun and accessible to everyone with a desire to discover more about the world of wine.

WineShop At Home is revolutionizing the way wine is discovered, enjoyed and purchased. At in-home Wine Tastings – where a living room, family room or patio – serve as the tasting room, you will guide your Hosts and their guests through six wines –a $120+ value for only $59 – serving up to 16 guests. Where else can you serve up the wine country lifestyle and entertain your family and friends for under $4 a person? Your Hosts and guests will have the opportunity to learn about wine, talk about wine, sip and shop for wine from an ever-changing menu of well-priced, exclusive artisan wine brands found nowhere else on earth.

WineShop At Home Also offers health insurance for their consultants!

Become a Wine Consultant

Many a wine lover has thought about making their own wine, maybe owning a small vineyard, or just working in a vineyard wine shop on the weekends in order to learn more about wine. Taking on such an endeavor is of course intimidating, and quite often costly and time consuming. As an independent wine consultant with a direct sales company, you have the chance to learn about wine while earning a significant income. Best of all, as a business owner you get to set your own hours. So what exactly does an independent wine consultant do?

Try New Wines - Okay while this isn't an official job description, it is the BEST part of being a wine consultant. You have to know the wines you are serving, and the best way to do that is TASTE! If you are a consultant with a company that has a large assortment of wine that changes frequently, it can be interesting to have your first taste with your guests, but either way, you will definitely be tasting lots of wine as a consultant. WineShop at Home also has annual conventions where you will be able to taste the wines, as well as local training with other consultants.

Tasting Technique - One of the most important aspects of your job as a wine consultant is teaching proper wine tasting technique to your guests. Most guests will have either never attended a wine tasting or have only attended them in large groups at a festival. The guests may have seen others swirl their wine but have no idea WHY you are supposed to do it. They may know they should look at the wine but have no idea what they are looking for, it's your job to go through each of the steps so they can have a better appreciation for the wine they are tasting.

Wine Pairing - One of the most intimidating aspects of wine for your guests will be what to pair the wine with. As an independent wine consultant you will explain in simple terms what the wines you are tasting will be best paired with, and you may even have the host prepare some of these foods so the guests can taste the difference in the wine when paired with an appropriate food.

Collect Orders - Some companies call orders by other terms, but your quest is to sell or market as much wine as possible at a tasting, as that is how you earn your income. You will be responsible for collecting orders and payment and submitting them to the company to be fulfilled. After that you will make sure to follow up with your guests to ensure they are satisfied customers and everything was received.

Success Stories

Finding WineShop At Home has been a dream come true for me. I was an accountant for most of my life but always had a love for wine and a yearning to be part of the glorious world of wine . It started out for me as a fun, social outlet. I was intrigued to work with a company that dealt with numerous small production vintners in the top California wine regions. When my son graduated from college I decided to do something for myself and make this my career of choice.
I was fortunate enough to become WineShop At Home's 1st Director and also earn my way to their 1st international trip to Italy! My top consultant also earned her way and together we got to share in an amazing trip to Tuscany. I can't think of a better way to have your own business - learn about great wine, build a team of lifelong friends and share it all with others!
Cheers,
-Sharon Bacchetta

"I was an elementary classroom teacher before starting my first successful direct sales business over 20 years ago. As a mother of all boys, currently ages 9 up to 24, I love the benefits of being home based. I have always worked my business as a career choice and have personally experienced the full time income that comes along with that option. From swimming lessons to college tuition and fabulous trips this business provides so much for my boys. I still love to teach by training and helping new consultants become successful. I made the decision to move to Wine Shop at Home for many reasons, including the fresh new concept of Wine Tasting Parties and the diverse marketing options. I knew that this was going to be a huge success! With new states opening this is the perfect time to be in this fun, simple and successful business. I encourage you to come and celebrate with us!"

"When I first joined "WineShop at Home," I was exploring the opportunity to make a little extra money while doing something I've always enjoyed...tasting and sharing great wine. Little did I know that it would become such a rewarding part of my life! In addition to gaining extra income I have earned trips to the wine country for behind the scenes tours not available to the public. Through these trips I've learned a great deal about the science and art of winemaking. Best of all, however, are the people I've met through WineShop at Home - the company team, my fellow consultants, and the scores of new people I've met at tastings. They are now among those I consider good friends."
-Maureen Corr

"WineShop At Home is the perfect way to turn a hobby into a profitable past time. Not only do I get to sell great wine, but I also get to be apart of the wine country lifestyle while living hours away from Napa & Sonoma counties. I am able to balance my wine life with a toddler and encourage other mom's to get involved in starting their own business. I have been able to turn a love of wine into a great income along with amazing trips to the wine country. WineShop at Home has always encouraged me to reach for high goals and I have been able to be a leader in sales even with my busy schedule. This business allows me to gain a great income while still having all the time I need with my daughter."
-Kelly Cesa

"I joined WineShop At Home to turn my passion of wine into a career. Being a wine consultant has given me the opportunity to learn more about wine, meet some wonderful people and make new friends in addition to getting paid for doing something I love...sharing my passion of wine and the lifestyle that comes along with it". I feel extremely fortunate to have the team that I do for many reasons. They are generous, extremely supportive of myself and each other, creative, and fun-loving. I'm blessed to say that they are my friends". "This year I was able to earn my way to the conference all expenses paid and VIP treatment from my team sales. I love the opportunity to go to events with my team and encourage others to enjoy a fun and fulfilling wine life.
